Top players whose current season has been greatly affected by injury

Football-related injuries are part of the modern game. Every professional soccer player will have, at one point or the other suffer an injury no matter the level of severity. Since the start of the current season, a number of footballers have always seem to get sidelined through injuries. Through no fault of theirs, these players always seem to get the rough end of the stick, barely featuring for their respective teams due to one injury or the other. Below are players who were hoping for a better and consistent performance on the pitch this campaign, but unfortunately their innermost goal has been greatly affected by injury.
1- Anthony Martial
The Frenchman was hoping that this would be his season for United, but injuries has persistently kept him on the sideline this term. Martial has not started for United since playing against Manchester City at Old Trafford on January 14. He was forced off the pitch with a hip injury at half-time during that game and his only appearance since was as a substitute against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup at the beginning of February. It was the uncertainty of his fitness that forced Manchester United to bring in Dutch striker Wout Weghorst who has started every single game since he arrived the club in January.
The 27 year old who is contracted to United until the summer of 2024, has played just over 700 minutes this season and he’s been absent for the majority of this campaign due to hamstring, Achilles, back and hip injuries.
2- Reece James
Chelsea and Graham Potter have been dealt a massive injury blow with Reece James being forced to withdraw from England’s squad to take on Ukraine on Sunday evening. The 23-year-old Chelsea defender has struggled with injury problems all season-long and unfortunately it looks like there’s another setback. James came on in Thursday night’s impressive win against Italy but was only on the pitch for just over five minutes after replacing Bukayo Saka. This is the fourth problem James has had this season, but it appears to be a recurrence of the hamstring problem that kept him out at the start of the month for the game against Leeds United.
3- Neymar
It was the last thing that PSG supporters needed ahead of what was already a difficult Champions League Round of 16 second leg at Bayern Munich, as star attacker Neymar was ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle problem. Neymar went down with another injury during a victory over LOSC Lille on February 19, with the Brazilian star stretchered off the field after rolling his ankle during the second half of the match.
The injury struck the same right ankle that caused Neymar problems at the World Cup, and the club announced on March 6 that it will require surgery that will keep him out from three to four months, effectively ending his 2022/23 season.
4- N’Golo Kante
The Frenchman has taken another significant step towards his injury recovery after featuring in a Chelsea development squad fixture. Earlier this month, the Frenchman returned to full first-team training after missing all but two games of the 2022/23 Premier League season with a significant hamstring injury. With the season almost coming to an end, Kante would be looking to play a key part as Chelsea look to salvage something out of their not so fantastic season.
5- Paul Pogba
Another player whose season has been marred by injury is Paul Pogba. Since returning to Juventus on a free transfer from Manchester United, the 29 year old has made only two appearances for the Old Lady. Pogba had only just returned to action for Juventus having sustained a knee injury in pre-season. A torn meniscus injury, which required surgery in pre-season, prompted subsequent setbacks and kept the midfielder out until late February. The France international wants to return soon after domestic football resumes next month.
6- Luis Diaz
Luis Diaz has been a major miss for Liverpool during his time out on the sidelines through injury. The Reds forward suffered a serious knee injury on October 9 in the 3-2 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League and has been sidelined ever since. There was initially hope that the Colombia international could return after the conclusion of the World Cup. However, Diaz suffered a setback and required further surgery which lengthened his recovery.
7- Pedri
Barcelona midfielder Pedri has been ruled out of El Clasico on April 5 and will not return to action for another three to four weeks, according to reports. The news will come as a blow to head coach Xavi Hernandez, who has clearly missed the attacking midfielder’s influence in the center of the park. The 20-year-old suffered a thigh injury in Barcelona’s 2-2 Europa League last 16 play off first leg on February 16 against Manchester United and has been sidelined since.
