Senate Presidency Shouldn’t Be Zoned– Basiru

The spokesman for the ninth Senate and the lawmaker representing the Osun Central Senatorial District, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has kicked against zoning of leadership positions in the 10th Assembly.

Basiru said in an exclusive interview with Sunday PUNCH that if all geopolitical zones were allowed to contest freely during the presidential election, then each zone should be allowed a fair contest for the National Assembly leadership.

Following the National Assembly election that took place on February 25, the ruling All Progressives Congress maintains a majority in the Senate, having secured 57 seats.

The APC senators eyeing the Senate presidency have been lobbying their colleagues for support.

Ranking senators who have indicated interest in the job are Jibrin Barau (Kano), Uzor Kalu ( Abia), Sani Musa (Niger), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), and Dave Umahi (Ebonyi).

Basiru said, “Personally, I don’t believe that the Senate presidency should be zoned because in the just concluded presidential election, there was nothing like zoning; the leading four candidates came from different parts of Nigeria; two from the southern part – Peter Obi from the South-East, while Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is from the South-West.

Taraba State governor-elect, Lt. Col Agbu Kefas (retd.), on Saturday said he would keep all the promises he made during the electioneering campaigns, saying, “The era of promise and fail is over.”

While stating that his victory at the polls was part of the deal he struck with the people, he said the people had reposed in him their future and hopes, promising that he would not take it lightly.

Kefas made the promise in a statement by his spokesperson, Emmanuel Bello, which was obtained by journalists in Abuja.

He said, “Giving me this mandate is a serious matter and the social contract I have with the people is one I take seriously. I won’t play with their mandate. I promise to fulfill all I said and we shall accomplish them in our first 100 days in office.”

Army Denies Allegations

The Nigerian Army has distanced itself from any involvement in the Reuters report on alleged termination of 10,000 pregnancies and massacre of children in the Northeast.

The denial came through its witness, Major General Victor Ezeugwu,,who appeared before the Special Independent Investigation Panel on Human Rights Violations in Counter Insurgency Operations in Northeast.

Speaking at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) yesterday, Gen. Ezeugwu expressed surprise about Reuters’ allegations of massive abortion of pregnancies, the massacre of children, and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence.

While vehemently denying the report, the witness stated that such claims have no place in a professional and modern Army.

Meanwhile, the probe panel has expressed surprise and suspicion at the sudden appearance at the panel of a lawyer from Reuters, Clifford Kalu, who walked into the hearing session, despite the international media organization’s refusal to appear before the panel.

In his testimony before the seven-member panel, Gen. Ezeugwu dismissed the allegations against the army as unfounded.

Tension Over Alleged Move To Arrest Obi, Datti

Tension has continued to build up across the country, particularly among the supporters of presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi over purported plans by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to get him arrested.

The alleged move was sequel to the activities of the former Anambra Governor, his running mate, Datti Ahmed and their supporters after losing the February 25 presidential poll.

Recall that Peter Obi, his party and supporters, popularly known as Obidients, rejected the outcome of the just concluded presidential poll that produced Bola Tinubu of APC as president-elect.

DAILY POST reports that Obi, who through his campaigns late 2022, galvanised many young and first-time voters, came third in the presidential poll, behind the winner, Bola Tinubu of the ruling party and main opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar.
