AFCON QUALIFIERS: Final Group D Table After Yesterday's Games As Egypt Edge Close To Qualifying

* Egypt 2-0 Malawi

Egypt welcomed Malawi to Cairo for the first leg of their thrilling 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying doubleheader yesterday. The hosts piled on the pressure from the start, and their early dominance was rewarded in the 20th minute, when Salah sent in a fine finish, thanks to a beautiful assist from Mohamed Hamdy. Just seconds before the break, Omar Marmoush sent a powerful strike past Malawi goalkeeper Thomu into the goal to extend the Pharaohs’ lead.

After the break, the hosts’ performance dipped, allowing Malawi to gain momentum. Malawi’s best chance came in the 70th minute, when second-half substitute Stenie Davie fired a fantastic shot from outside the box, but it went wide of the post. Guinea hosted Ethiopia in the other Group D match. The hosts got off to a fast start, with Francois Kamano putting Guinea ahead in the 39th minute thanks to a brilliant pass from Ilaix Moriba. The visitors looked stronger in the second half and began to create chances to equalize, but things went from bad to worse when a poorly executed set piece in the 73rd minute allowed Guinea to counterattack and Mohamed Bayo ran onto Issiaga Sylla’s pass before slamming a hard shot past Habtamu to secure Guinea’s 2-0 victory yesterday.
