Naira Scarcity Reduced Vote-Buying_Buhari

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Saturday said the scarcity of naira notes reduced the incidence of vote-buying. The President, after voting in Daura, Katsina State, urged Nigerians to collect money offered to them by vote-buyers but vote their conscience.

The naira scarcity had led to crisis nationwide, in which case many Nigerians lamented their inability to buy necessities or move around. The Central Bank of Nigeria had come under heavy criticism for the policy, which many described as ill-timed and poorly implemented.

Buhari told journalists after voting at Ward A, Sarkin Yara Polling Unit, 003, in Katsina, “I am aware that the money is not there like before for people to sway voters, like they used to do. And if they bring out money, the people should pocket it and still vote their conscience.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday. The statement was titled ‘Nigerians know we mean what we say, they will vote for us again, says President Buhari.’

APC ll Win Not Less Than 28 States-Lawan

Senate President Ahmad Lawan said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will win not less than 28 States.

Lawan, according to a statement by his Special Adviser (Media), Ola Awoniyi, in Abuja, spoke while responding to questions from journalists at the Katuzu ward polling unit in Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State where he cast his vote during the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

We are in control of the National Assembly. We have won the Presidency. We are going to win nothing less than 28 states at the end of this election,” Lawan said.The APC controls 21 of the 36 States with an outright win in 12 States during the last presidential vote.

Why Obasanjo Didn’t Vote For First Time Since 1999

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was not present to vote at his polling unit 22, Ward 11, Olusomi compound ,Totoro, area of Abeokuta-North local government area of the state, Ogun State in Saturday’s governorship and state houses of assembly elections.

It was the first time that the two time Nigerian leader will not vote in an election since Nigeria return to democracy in 1999.

Obasanjo was Nigeria’s first elected president when the country returned to democracy in 1999 from military rule.

He was reelected for another term of office in 2003.

He had also served as Nigeria’s military president.

Obasanjo who had earlier threw his support behind the presidential candidate of the Labour Party ,Peter Obi, voted in the February 25, 2023 presidential and National Assembly election.

But the Labour Party presidential candidate lost the election to Bola Tinubu of All Progressives Congress, APC.

APC Stalwart Urges Atiku, Obi To Withdraw Litigation

Mr Mohammed Kailani, a stalwart of the All Peoples Congress (APC) has urged opposition presidential candidates to withdraw their litigations over the Feb. 25 presidential election.

Presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and that of Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi headed to the courts to contest the victory of the APC candidate, Sen. Bola Tinubu.

Kailani, National Coordinator, Voter Education and Awareness of the APC told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Kaduna that the withdrawal of the litigations would pave the way for national unity and development.

He said the litigants should place national interests above personal interests.

“If they really love Nigeria, they should withdraw their cases from the court.

“Their efforts would only become efforts in futility and would not be beneficial to us as a nation,’’ Kailani said.

El-Rufai Alleges voters’ Intimidation

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has alleged that in Southern Kaduna, there were reports of voters intimidation, which favoured a particular opposition party, thereby deeming the chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area.

He spoke after casting his vote at his Unguar Sarki Polling Unit.

He said reports reaching him indicated that voters were forced to vote for a certain political party in Southern Kaduna.

Besides, armoured personal vehicle and other military vehicles and motorcycles manned by stern-looking and combat- ready security personnel were seen in strategic locations within Kaduna metropolis.

They were found patrolling major roads in Kawo, Unguar Sarki, Ahmadu Bello way, independence way, Kachia road and Aliyu Akilu road in combatant forms.
