Why Graham Potter is at fault in Chelsea's 2-2 draw against Everton
Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Everton today in the 28th round of the 2022–23 English Premier League competition was a disappointing result for the Blues. Despite having the majority of possession in the match, they failed to win the game. Manager Graham Potter is at fault for this result, as he made several errors in team substitution and tactics that ultimately cost the team a victory.

Firstly, Potter’s decision to use a three-man defense was a major mistake. Chelsea’s back three were simply overwhelmed by Everton’s attack, as the Toffees were able to create numerous chances on goal. Furthermore, the lack of defensive cover in midfield allowed Everton to outnumber Chelsea’s midfielders and launch counter-attacks with ease.
In addition, Potter’s decision to start Joao Felix in midfield also backfired. Felix, who is normally a forward, was unable to provide the necessary defensive cover in midfield as he was unable to contain Everton’s attacking players. This lack of defensive solidity in the midfield allowed Everton to run riot and create chances at will.
Furthermore, Potter’s decision to start Kai Havertz up front was also a major mistake. Havertz is a deep-lying striker and is not effective when the team needs to break down a strong defense. As a result, Chelsea’s attack was stifled, and they were unable to create any clear-cut chances.
To sum up, Graham Potter is at fault for Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Everton today. His poor team selection and tactics ultimately cost the team a victory. As a result, he needs to learn from his mistakes and make sure he does not repeat them in the future.
