Obi inciting Nigerians after Tinubu’s victory – APC

The All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council has accused Peter Obi, the Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, of making inflammatory comments.

The ruling party in a statement on Friday knocked the former Anambra governor for repeatedly condemning the victory of Presidential-elect, Bola Tinubu. Bayo Onanuga, Director of Media and Publicity, APC PCC, responded to some utterances Obi made during recent interviews on television stations. “The defeated Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi still goes around inflaming passions,” the spokesperson noted.

Onanuga said Obi has been spreading lies as if he is still campaigning for the highest office in the land, weeks after the exercise was concluded and a winner announced. About the LP flagbearer’s media rounds on Arise TV and Channels TV, Onanuga chided Obi for making “profoundly misleading, criminally false and inciting statements about the election that he lost woefully”.

The leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State and the former Governor of the state Rotimi Amaechi has cast his vote at his Ward 8, Unit 14, Ubima Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area.

Amaechi, who is the immediate past Minister of Transportation, addressed pressmen who expressed dissatisfaction with the process. Speaking after casting his votes, Amaechi stated that even though the election was peaceful in his community there are reports of the arrest of candidates of the APC for the polls.

Amaechi also alleged that the materials brought for the election at his unit were fake, but that they decided to vote to allow peace to reign. This is, however, coming as it was alleged that the APC Candidate for Ahoada East State Constituency 2 seat in the polls, Ukalikpe Napoleon, has been kidnapped.

Hoodlums destroy voting materials in Bayelsa

Some thugs have reportedly hijacked and destroyed voting materials meant for the House of Assembly election in Wards 2, 3, 4, and 5 in constituency five of the Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Governor Douye Diri has strongly condemned the act, according to his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah. The governor urged the Inspector General of Police and Commissioner of Police for Bayelsa state to restore peace in the area. Meanwhile, accreditation and voting were yet to start at wards polling units 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19 in Atissa Constituency, Yenagoa LGA of Bayelsa State as of 9 am.

Our correspondent observed that INEC officials and balloting materials had yet to leave the Atissa RAC as of 8:45 am. Buses and other vehicles were seen being loaded with voting materials to depart for polling units in the area.

Aregbesola asks states to decongest prisons

The Minister of Interior, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has said states have a huge role to play in decongesting correctional centers. He pointed out that about 70 percent of inmates awaiting trial were state offenders.

He called on states to either fast-track the trial of the inmates awaiting trial or build holding facilities for them. He said the Federal Government was ready to provide personnel that would man the facilities. Aregbesola, who spoke through his media aide, Sola Fasure, in an interview with our correspondent on Friday, expressed the readiness of the Federal Government to work with states in decongesting the facilities.

He stated, “The most important step in decongestion has to be taken by the states and this is where we should all be looking into. More than 70 percent of inmates awaiting trials are state offenders. “The states can do either or both of two things. First, and more importantly, is accelerating the criminal trial process so that the cases are promptly dispensed with. Long and seemingly indeterminate trials are responsible for the disproportionate number of inmates awaiting trial.
