MUSIC REVIEW: Olamide – Spirit

The Spirit Wasn’t So High But He Surely Will Make You Dance At Least

Once you are big you are big but could have done better in Spirit.

The beautiful thing about having a core fan base or “blowing” in the Nigerian music industry is once you are big , you are big regardless of the content you put out.

Remember when Lil Kesh, one of Olamide’s  soldiers released “Logo Benz” , which was one of the most insensitive songs ever released in the country, his fans still danced to it in the clubs , cars and whatever shrine they worshipped in, thankfully the NBC had to take it off air but this is an Olamide review right, let get back to it

“Spirit” is the 2nd single of the year from the supposed music demigod produced  by his sidekick Pheelz.

Olamide opens the song by saying he has refused to downgrade from being a demigod to a human. This right here is a bold statement to make by a once rapper who became singer and after much criticism he simply identified as an  entertainer.

The same man who involved the whole of mainland in his beef with our favorite CEO , Don Jazzy. The same man who praised Yomi Shogunle and brought him to his OLIC amidst the inconsiderate SARS’ killings.

I won’t lie, this song has every tendency to becoming a hit as the country accepts mediocrity and the song sends an easy going vibe as soon as it sets in but that’s just all about it , the chorus is the only defining part of the song, the rest of it sounds  like a better version of the failed Davido’s freestyle on Tim Westwood UK.

Olamide’s dexterity is actually amazing ; if you weren’t a Nigerian, i bet you wouldn’t believe he did “woske” just a couple of months of  ago.

I can understand the message and motivation behind the song but the process behind its making doesn’t sound like the typical Olamide. I applaud Pheelz for trying every way possible to making the song feel less disproportionate.

Spirit is a highlife vibe that  it’s acceptance depends on the mood you are in and would definitely make more sense when you are two bottles down on a very cozy weekend evening after your favorite football team have just won a game.

Not a song you will instantly like but a song that will grow you since the radio / clubs will play excessively because it’s by a blown artiste.

Personally , I have been through the rigorous yet exciting process of making a music project, I know the time and energy put into placing everything in the right order but one thing is also certain , Olamide could have done better.
